Reminders by J: Simplify.

“Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.”

I think life is way simpler than how we perceive it to be. Whilst it’s great to be intellectual, to question things, to try and learn/understand more, it’s also important to know when you are overdoing it. Is there such a thing as information overload? I think in some ways too much of anything will prove to be harmful in one way or another. With all the knowledge that we have at the tip of our fingers nowadays it’s easy for us to over-think and over-complicate everything.


Why it’s important:

A few months ago I found myself consuming a rapid amount of information on a daily basis. I was constantly listening to self-help podcasts, reading about different things, learning a lot of new information that was all aimed at helping me improve the quality of my life. I soon found myself arguing back and forth in my head, with different pieces of information that I’ve learned that contradict each other. It felt like an endless loop of thoughts, arguing back and forth nonstop. I’m sure you have experienced feeling like your head is about to explode; and I felt that multiple times a day. I realized that I couldn’t quiet down or stop the loud thoughts floating around in my head with more thoughts. This is one example of why simplifying is important.

Simple is the opposite of complicated. So in order to lead a simple life, to not weave your way into an overthinking mess, you have to remember to simplify, and in order to do that, you don’t need to turn into a full on minimalist. You don’t have to go from one extreme to another, since that again makes you fall into a trap of overdoing and over-complicating life.


How to do it:

  • Simplifying Internally– I’m the type of person that can argue for or against the same topic for an extended period until my brain feels like it’s about to explode from indecision. In order to combat decision making, I’m learning that it is sometimes best to simply go with what feels right within. This can also go for your values and beliefs; whilst most people have established their core values and beliefs, there are a lot of topics that come up in life that require you to decide what you believe in- with such matters you can use the same method of what feels most right within you.


  • Simplifying Externally– When it comes to anything in your physical (outer) world such as products, food and basically anything that you consume, it’s best to be mindful of the fact that businesses are trying to sell you things. What does this have to do with anything? Well, whilst products and services are marketed to simplify your life, most of the time by consuming them, you are actually complicating your life rather than simplifying. For example, you hear about a toothbrush that vibrates in 3 different ways for different uses such as a tooth massage, a tooth deep cleaning and a regular cleaning. So now you start to doubt your dental hygiene regimen. How does this complicate your life? Well you didn’t have a problem with your toothbrush or how well it cleaned your teeth, and your teeth are in good health. Now that you are aware of this new product, you cannot help but over-think and over-complicate things because of the surge of doubt it has caused by comparing your ordinary toothbrush to something seemingly better. Now I’m not suggesting that you shouldn’t mind or invest in such products or services, I’m merely suggesting you do not let the knowledge of them cause you to doubt, over-think and complicate your life more.


  • By strengthening your trust in your own intuition, going with what feels most right and remembering to always keep things simple you will be able to free your mind of over-thinking and stress.
