Reminders by J: Focus on the Good.

“Focus more on promoting the good than on preventing the bad.”

Good facts are all around us. I think that we have gotten so used to being surrounded by so many good facts that we no longer recognize them as good facts. Like the strong walls of our homes that provide us safety and shelter, but we don’t notice that when we walk into a room. We don’t notice it because it is there, it has always been there and so our mind just filters it out.

Why it’s important:

“Taking in positive feelings can lift your mood, which will bring you more positive feelings, which can lift your mood further.” So it is essentially a massive cycle of positive feelings and goodness. In essence, the more we focus on and let in good facts, the more we’re allowing these good facts to nurture our souls. With focusing on the good overtime, we are reshaping our minds to become more positive minds, and as a result we will be happier people.

How to do it:

  • Notice existing good facts – the sun rose today; you completed something off of your to-do list; you just watched a really good movie. All of those things are examples of existing good facts. Take moments throughout your day to become aware of all of the existing good facts.
  • Create good facts – this can be as simple as smiling, which can instantly boost your mood; or it can be doing your favorite things; you can connect with others, you can even daydream of good facts which can count as creating them.
  • Practice Gratitude – the more you are thankful, the more you’ll have to be thankful for. Gratitude opens your eyes and helps you notice more good facts. I talk more in depth about this here.
  • Focus on the good through meditation – practice controlling your mind. Sit in silence and shift your focus inward. Try shifting from a negative mindset to a positive one. Work on this until it becomes second nature.
  • Stay with a positive thought for a while – try to stay focused on a positive thought or a good fact for a few seconds, or for as long as you can. Then picture this positive thought sinking into you. “Sink into it as it sinks into you.” Whatever that means to you, let the positive thought become a part of you.
  • Remember that even little good facts count – sometimes it can be difficult to find good facts… remember that even the littlest things count. You’re breathing right now; your body is doing it for you with minimum effort on your part. Focus on how good it feels to inhale and exhale. Find comfort in your own breath.

“When you’re focused on the good, the good gets better.”

“Life is like a camera. Focus on what’s important. Capture the good times. And if things don’t work out, just take another shot.”

(I was inspired to write about this topic while reading the book “Hardwiring Happiness” – Rick Hanson. I have yet to complete the book, but I am in love with it already, and I highly recommend it!)
