Reminders by J: Be Good to Yourself.

My entire life (up until a few years ago), I have tried to find home in others. I think this is something that a lot of people struggle with too. At some point we realize that home is within ourselves. This is why we need to be good to ourselves; and that is where self care comes in.

I’ve personally never heard of the concept of “self care” up until a few years ago where I came across it online. I don’t think it is a common concept, so I never heard it before it became a popular thing on the internet. Not many families teach their kids about self care. I mean sure, parents may teach their kids proper hygiene, and say the familiar phrase “take care of yourself” but that’s about it. I think that it should be taught, and I think that it should become more and more common.


Why do I think that?

Well, self care isn’t just about physical hygiene. Here’s a definition I pulled up from Google:

“Self-care is any activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. Although it’s a simple concept in theory, it’s something we very often overlook. Good self-care is key to improved mood and reduced anxiety. It’s also key to a good relationship with oneself and others.”

I think this concept should be more common because of how crucial it is to people’s mental health. Our brain controls our entire body, yet it is the most neglected part. Self care emphasizes not only taking care of the physical body, but more importantly the mental and emotional self.

You can’t take care of others, without taking care of yourself first. I’m a big advocate for putting yourself first and this is one of the main reasons why.


How to do it:

There aren’t any precise set of rules to follow, or a specific way to practice self care. It is something you should create and customize to yourself and your own needs. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Go offline – switch off your WIFI or put your phone on airplane mode for an hour when you wake up, and have a quiet and gentle morning. Ease yourself into the day.


  • Morning pages – keep a notebook or a piece of paper by your bed and when you wake up; write out your goals or intentions for the day ahead. Get yourself organized and excited for the day.


  • Schedule some ‘me-time’ – drink coffee (or your beverage of choice), and really relish in the moment. Listen to music, sit by your window or sit outside and do nothing but listen to music and enjoy your drink.


  • Go for a walk – I can’t stress enough how leaving the house and moving your body a little bit can change your entire mood. Get some fresh air and some vitamin D.


  • Read – nourish your soul with a good read. Lose yourself in a story other than your own, or strengthen your mind with knowledge from others experiences and advice via books or blogs.


  • De-stress by coloring – there are tons of “adult coloring books” that are basically books that are filled with outlines of pictures that you can color in. It’s a great way of being creative and unwinding.


  • Gratitude – before you go to bed, express gratitude for your day and all the little things that made you smile during the day.


  • Massage yourself – show your body some love. You don’t have to go to a fancy spa to get a massage; you can simply rub your own feet and feel great doing it.


Try to incorporate little self-care activities into your days here and there. You can also make it a weekly routine! Do it as much as you want, but the most important thing to remember is that self care shouldn’t be a one-time thing. Make it a habit.
